Many of us reach moments in life where we feel scattered, overwhelmed, or simply unsure of what truly matters. With so many demands pulling in different directions — work, relationships, health, creativity — it’s easy to lose sight of what brings us joy, purpose, and balance.

That’s where a simple yet profound coaching tool can make all the difference: the Life Wheel. This visual tool offers a structured way to take an honest 360-degree look at the various areas of your life. Completing this simple process will help you gain clarity and identify strategies to bring you closer to what you want in life.

At the heart of this process is a deep insight from Zen Coaching: we are what we long for. The qualities we seek — peace, freedom, love, vitality — are not external prizes to chase, but inner states already present within us. The Life Wheel helps us uncover these deeper needs and move from scattered striving to living our inner fulfillment.

How to Use the Life Wheel

1. Draw Your Wheel
Start by drawing a circle and dividing it into segments, like a pie. Each segment represents a key area of your life. Choose the categories that feel most relevant to you. I personally include areas connected to the three broader categories of what the ancient Greeks called “Ecstasis”, “Catharsis”, and “Communitas”. The categories I use are: Home, Intimacy, Family, Friends, Personal Health, Spirituality, Creativity, Money and Work.

2. Reflect and Rate
For each segment, ask yourself: How satisfied am I with this area of my life right now?
Rate each from 0 (not satisfied at all) to 10 (fully satisfied). This is not about perfection — it’s a way to take an honest snapshot of the present moment.

3. Discover the Deeper Longing
Next, go deeper: What would it give me if this area were a 10?
If you felt completely fulfilled in your work, for instance, what would that bring? A sense of purpose? Confidence? Freedom? This step helps you shift focus from surface-level goals to the essential qualities you truly long to experience. Write these longings down for each category.

4. Align from the Inside Out
Now that you’ve identified what really matters, you can begin to explore actions or strategies that help bring those qualities into your daily life. The key is to move from the inside out — not trying to “fix” your life from the outside, but expressing the wholeness that already exists within you.

This process invites self-awareness, honesty, and clarity. Rather than chasing external outcomes, it helps you live more intentionally — grounded in your true values and inner needs.

A Tool for Both Clarity and Compassion

The Life Wheel is not a one-time fix, but a compass you can return to whenever you feel out of sync or unclear. It can reveal not only where life feels off-balance, but also where you’re already thriving. And most importantly, it reconnects you with the inner resources that can guide your next steps — with more grace and purpose.

If you’re feeling the need for more direction, presence, or alignment in your life, this tool is a beautiful place to begin. If you are ready to go deeper, I invite you to start your own Zen Coaching journey.
