Kung fu breathwork

無爲; wú wéi = non-striving

When we hear “breathwork” we may think of energising breathing techniques that put us into altered states of consciousness. Used correctly, forceful breathing can promote health and emotional release – but it is not the focus of this training.

功夫; gōngfu = any skill or art acquired and perfected through practice

气功; qìgōng = breathwork, life force cultivation

Kung Fu Breathwork refers to the inner art of mastering the subtle breath and resting into our being.

body

It all starts with the bodyThe first 2 lectures focus on physical health and foundational principles for the inner journey. We open the body and sink the qi.

BREATH

Cultivation of the subtle breath is the foundation of any qigong system. In the next 3 lectures, we learn how to relax the mind and work with qi within the energy body.

MEDITATION

Meditation is about finding peace within ourselves. Through Daoist and Zen practices, we start a process of releasing blockages and resting into our natural state of Being. We learn the art of listening and releasing through non-striving.

PART 1: The body

If the physical body is out of balance, the subtle energies cannot flow properly.
Stagnation of qi prevents our organs from functioning properly and manifests as symptoms and disease.
A strong foundation in the physical body is the
groundwork for our inner cultivation.
Through powerful qigong forms, we increase energy and vitality in the physical body and energetic body.

1. flow and health as foundation

In this Frame we start building a foundation for our qigong practice (practice, posture, principles). We explore the Daoist path and learn the basics of the internal arts.

Baduanjin is a practice that promotes physical and mental health by stimulating the body's major energy pathways (meridians). We also learn the Health qigong, a form that helps release blockages.

2: open heart and subtle breath

Building on the foundations, we continue learning about the principles underlying our practice. Through coordinated breathing and gentle movements we open the heart and relax the mind.

We learn Smiling Heart qigong as well as seated daoyin practices to increase our somatic awareness and experience of the subtle breath (what is known as qi or prana).

PART 2: inner breathWORK

Building on our foundation.

A key aspect of the Daoist internal arts known as 內功 (nèigōng; “inner work”) is the cultivation of the breath because it serves as a bridge between our physical body and our energy body (qi ). Through coordinated breathing and gentle movements, we increase our somatic awareness and cultivation of the subtle breath (what is known as qi or prana).

3: anchoring the breath

Learning to anchor the breath in the lower abdomen is a crucial step in our practice as it prevents agitation of the the nervous system and mind. This process reduces stress and lays the groundwork for spiritual development.

We also learn daoyin and mindfulness practices, relaxation and breath awareness as ways to allow reality to unfold naturally.

4: building the lower dantian

Next, we let the breath settle and build a container for the qi in the lower abdomen 丹田 (dāntián; "elixir field"). This is a crucial step in all neigong systems as it enables storage and circulation of qi in the body.

We learn to allow the sinking of the qi in a seated posture. We explore the belly as a refuge for the breath.

5: cultivating qi

Next stage is activation and mobilization. We go deeper into the understanding and experience of qi. We cultivate awareness of the subtle breath through seated neigong.

We learn "lian qi ba fa gong", a wonderful seated qigong form where we use our hands and awareness to bring balance and healing to the body.

PART 3: MEDITATION

Once the breath is anchored and we are familiar with the circulation of qi, we are ready to enter into meditation. Meditation is about peace. Although we keep chasing after things in the external world, on some level we know that we never find true peace in any external object. Meditation is about finding what we long for inside of ourselves.

6: internal alchemy

Rather than striving to still the mind, we discover the energy behind thoughts and emotions. We ask ourselves a question: can this energy be transmuted to support my health and growth? This is what we explore through the process of Daoist alchemy.

We practice making space and staying with our emotions through meditations. We also learn principles for how to transmute the energy behind destructive habit patterns.

7: relaxing into our natural state

We are on the path of becoming natural and awake human beings. We do not enter meditation through effort or intention but through the principle of wu wei, or "non-striving". The physical breath provide a gateway to the subtle breath, which connects us with the natural state.

"Spirituality is the burning of that which is false" - this is the way of the Daoist water method of meditation. By learning to release whatever inhibits us, we discover peace that is inherent to the depths of our being.
